Soba Flower Festival

An autumn festival among white buckwheat fields in Sakashita, with balloon rides and local food.

The Soba Flower Festival is held from mid to late September at the Hanano-ko Nature Park in Sakashita, Nakatsugawa, celebrating fields of blooming buckwheat. Around seven hectares of soba fields—among the largest in Gifu Prefecture—turn into a soft white carpet, framed by the surrounding mountains and creating a memorable autumn landscape.

During the event, visitors can join tethered hot-air balloon rides to view the flower fields from above, or enjoy local specialties such as hot soba, buckwheat-flour cookies, and tarts. Photo and postcard contests, woodworking activities, and walking events add light variety without overwhelming the relaxed atmosphere, allowing each person to enjoy the scenery at their own pace. Even after the main event days, there is often a period when the fields remain open for free viewing, making it easy to visit by car and appreciate the flowers in a quieter setting.
