If you are traveling from Kyoto, we recommend staying overnight in Nakatsugawa rather than visiting as a quick stop. After exploring Kyoto’s temples and historic streets, Nakatsugawa offers a peaceful gateway to the Nakasendo, where you can enjoy Magome-juku, mountain scenery, and the traditional post-town atmosphere.

For a memorable itinerary, leave Kyoto in the morning, arrive in Nakatsugawa around midday, visit Magome-juku in the afternoon, and stay overnight before continuing your journey.

Getting Around from Nakatsugawa

Nakatsugawa also serves as a convenient base for exploring the surrounding region. From JR Nakatsugawa Station, it is easy to access nearby destinations such as Magome-juku, the ruins of Naegi Castle and the scenic Ena Gorge.

Buses to Magome-juku depart directly from the station, making it a popular starting point for Nakasendo hiking.
