About

Nakasendo Stays is a collection of guesthouses operated along Japan’s historic Nakasendo trail in central Japan.

Unlike listing platforms, we operate our own properties. This allows us to maintain a consistent approach to hospitality, design and guest experience while preserving the individual character of each house and its surroundings. At the same time, we actively support exploration of the region by providing contextual information, regional insights and curated guidance that help guests move confidently along the trail and into its surrounding villages and landscapes.

Our focus lies in the Nakatsugawa area, a historic gateway to the trail and an ideal starting point for exploring nearby post towns and mountain sections on foot.

Our Story

Nakasendo Stays was created with the intention of offering travelers a reliable and locally rooted base along one of Japan’s most meaningful historic routes.

As interest in walking the Nakasendo has grown, so has the need for accommodations that are thoughtfully integrated into the region rather than detached from it. At the same time, many travelers seek orientation and context when exploring rural areas.

The idea behind Nakasendo Stays is therefore twofold: to operate guesthouses that support exploration and to make that exploration more accessible through clear, regionally grounded information.

Why Nakasendo

The Nakasendo is more than a scenic trail. It represents a historic corridor that once connected political and cultural centers through mountain landscapes and post towns.

Unlike more urbanized destinations, the Nakasendo offers a quieter experience shaped by forests, traditional wooden townhouses and human-scale villages.

The Nakatsugawa region provides access to some of the trail’s most iconic and walkable sections, making it an ideal base for both first-time visitors and experienced long-distance walkers.

By combining well-located stays with curated regional knowledge, we aim to make the richness of the Nakasendo accessible without oversimplifying it.

How We Work

We operate our properties directly.

This allows us to:

maintain consistent hospitality standards
ensure quality and reliability
support guests personally
preserve local character and architectural integrity

Beyond the physical stay, we provide structured regional information, including recommended walking sections, nearby points of interest and seasonal highlights, enabling guests to explore with greater understanding and independence.

Each property is embedded in its local context, but united by a shared approach to welcoming travelers along the trail and guiding them into the surrounding landscape.

Our goal is to make the region accessible without reducing it to a standardized experience.

The Team

Nakasendo Stays is operated by a dedicated local team with experience in hospitality, regional development and guest services.

We work closely with local communities and service providers to ensure that each stay contributes positively to the surrounding area.

Our team supports guests not only during their stay, but in understanding how to explore the Nakasendo responsibly, confidently and with deeper awareness of its cultural and natural context.

Nakasendo Stays is a hospitality brand operated by MuCHuu LLC, offering a curated collection of guesthouses, townhouses and ryokan along Japan’s historic Nakasendo trail.
