Magome-juku Ice & Snow Lantern Festival

A quiet winter festival where ice and snow lanterns illuminate Magome-juku’s cobblestone streets after dark.

The Magome-juku Ice & Snow Lantern Festival is a quiet, atmospheric winter event that transforms the post town after dark. Typically held from late January to mid-February, with different post towns along the Kisoji hosting the event on separate dates each year, it offers a fleeting glimpse of winter at its most serene.

Snow and ice lanterns are placed along the stone-paved slope, revealing a completely different side of Magome compared to the daytime. In the clear winter air, the soft, flickering lights create a gentle beauty distinct from bright illuminations or large-scale displays.

While care is needed on potentially icy roads and paths, walking slowly through the lantern-lit streets offers a rare chance to experience history, winter, and night-time stillness all at once.
