Narai-juku

Japan’s longest preserved post town, with an unbroken row of traditional buildings along the Nakasendo.

Narai-juku is a long and well-preserved post town along the historic Nakasendo route, once known as one of its wealthiest settlements. Stretching over a wide area, the town features continuous rows of traditional wooden townhouses, reflecting its past importance as a center of trade, lodging, and craftsmanship.

Unlike smaller post towns, Narai-juku conveys a strong sense of scale and continuity. Visitors can walk extended sections of the former main street, passing restored inns, museums, and local shops while observing how the town’s layout supported long-distance travel and daily life during the Edo period.

Narai-juku is well suited for travelers who want to experience the Nakasendo in depth rather than as a single highlight. It works particularly well as a longer stop, allowing for slow exploration, cultural discovery, and an understanding of how major post towns functioned within Japan’s historic travel network.
